About Joseph
Documentary photography focused on people, places and everyday moments across the UK.

I’m Joseph, a documentary photographer based in Essex, working across the UK and beyond. My approach is quiet and observational, focused on what’s happening rather than directing it. I’m drawn to moments that aren’t announced — the interactions, gestures, and pauses that give a day its character. These are often the photographs that matter most over time, because they feel honest and familiar when you return to them.

A creative & focused mindset
I first started taking photos and videos when I was very young. I grew up living opposite my nan and granddad, so we spent a lot of time together, and my granddad was always tinkering with cameras, camcorders, and printers. Every time I went round, he had something new on the go.
I’d often end up using whatever he was working with, watching how he captured everyday moments and slowly built up a record of me and my brother growing up. Looking back, it wasn’t just the cameras that stayed with me — it was his way of seeing things. He taught me, without ever really saying it, to enjoy the process, not sweat the small stuff, and to have fun along the way.
That sense of nostalgia — of holding onto how moments felt, not just how they looked — is what shapes my photographic style today. I’m drawn to the emotion first. When out shooting, I believe the most important thing is capturing those feelings honestly, rather than prioritising perfect backdrops or unimportant details.
Outside of photography, I live in the Essex countryside with my wife, Jessica, and our dachshund, Olive. I spend much of my free time outdoors and have a background in endurance running, including completing a marathon. It’s taught me consistency, focus, and the value of seeing things through — qualities that carry directly into how I photograph, from quietly observing moments as they unfold to taking real care in how the final images come together.
