A brief encounter with New York

February 2026

A short afternoon walking north through Manhattan before the city turned to night.

We landed from Heathrow early in the afternoon and had only a few hours of daylight left once we reached the hotel. With the camera in hand we headed straight out, following the streets north from southern Manhattan. The character of the city changed quickly — quieter residential blocks giving way to dense avenues and eventually the tall glass and steel of the skyline.

Our first stop was the 9/11 Memorial just around the corner. From there we made the long walk uptown past the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and eventually Times Square as the evening lights took over the streets.

Grand Central stood out immediately. Its scale and traditional architecture break through the surrounding modern towers. I ran out of daylight before reaching Central Park, but the city left enough unfinished that it already feels like a place to return to.
